Red Win Kuiper: An astoundingly good optic

#short dot#LPVO#Red Win#optic

You want something affordable that looks similar to the Sig Sauer TANGO6T or the Vortex Razor HD for your new URG-I build, or just a very nice optic that matches your FDE furniture? Then the Red Win Kuiper 1-6x is what you're searching for.

Now in case you discovered this article while searching for optics for your real steel rifle, I gotta disappoint you, this is only about airsoft guns. The Kuiper is a really well made optic that is more than enough for any airsoft rifle, but I wasn't able to test it on a real gun. If you did, hit me up.

The purpose of LPVOs

LPVOs (short for low power variable optic) bridge the gap between regular, non-magnified optics like reflex or holographic sights, and magnified sharpshooters optics. LPVOs usually feature a non-magnified or near-non-magnified setting where they are usable almost like a reflex sight but can be dialed up to allow for target identification at long ranges. Shooting with 6x magnification is of course utterly useless in airsoft, but in larger-scale environments with multiple factions, the target-id capabilities can certainly give you an advantage.

Build quality

  • Beautiful, scratch-resistant coating in a bronze/gold color. I wasn't able to scratch the coating with a key and moderate force.
  • All adjustment dials have a solid resistance to them, nothing moves on its own. The windage / elevation adjustment dials have to be pulled outwards, away from the scope to be adjusted and can be pushed in to fix them in place. With the included tool (or a coin) the caps can be screwed off to reveal an adjustment screw that allows to adjust the zero position of the adjustment wheels.
  • Magnification adjustment wheel is solid and requires some force to move, using the included throw-lever (use loctite!) makes it much easier but allows for the scope to adjust itself when the throw-lever snags on gear.
  • Windage and elevation are adjustable with clicks that feel very solid and high quality.

Reticle

The image pretty much says it all. The reticle is second focal plane, meaning that it stays the same size no matter the magnification, so if you were to use it to measure distance, it would only yield correct results at maximum magnification.

Using the box in the top right corner you can measure distance by putting a person into the box and aligning it with one of the three lines. If it fits between the bottom and the line with the number 5 then the person is 500 yards (457m) away from you, similarly with the lines 3 and 4.

The illumination is a bit dim at daylight. If you are shooting towards a bright backdrop such as the sky or a white wall, you will have problems picking up the dot. Also, the illumination can be seen from the "wrong" end of the scope, so an illuminated reticle can give you away if you try to be sneaky in a dark forest for example. This is a problem with almost all airsoft optics, as they are just too cheaply made to account for this problem.

Brightness can be adjusted in 5 steps with an off-position inbetween every one, which means you can set it to a desired brightness level and turn it on and off from there without having to go from or to the zero setting, which is a very handy feature.

Eye relief / box

In contrast to many cheap airsoft optics, the eye relief on the Red Win Kuiper is very large, with between 7 and 10cm (2.5" and 4") which makes finding the eye box very easy and quick.

Kill flash

The scope features threadings on the front where the included kill flash can be screwed on. Mine already took a shot at about 1.6J and withstood it perfectly, so I would say it can be trusted to protect your lens at high muzzle velocities.

The kill flash didn't come loose after a whole game day on a GHK M4, but putting a little bit of loctite into the threads doesn't hurt.

Throw lever

The included throw lever can be screwed into a small whole on the adjustment wheel for quicker adjustment of the magnification. It feels solid and works like a charm, although I would again advise you to use some loctite, because mine came loose after a few hours and you definitely don't want to lose it.

Summary

For the price of only some 100 bucks this optic offers phenomenal quality and can hold up to some higher priced optics like the Vortex Strike-Eagle. Additionally it comes with everthing that is needed to start playing immediately. I would buy this optic again any day.
